Plott Hounds: Puppies, Breeders, Adult Dogs And Adoption

When looking to adopt a dog, it is important for potential pet owners to thoroughly research the breed they are interested in owning. While many cross breeds like the puggle (a cross between a pug and a beagle) are trendy and others like the golden retriever are still classic, another dog to consider for adoption is the Plott Hound.

The Plott Hound is a dog that has been bred in the southern United States since the mid-1700s. The breed is named after the family that brought the dogs from Germany and started to breed them in the U.S. upon their arrival. This dog is a hunter and was initially bred with the intent of hunting down animals such as wild boars and bears. Breeders often boast about their excellent tracking and hunting skills as well as their loyal nature toward their owners.

One of several coonhound breeds, the Plott Hound's notable characteristics include its athletic and well-proportioned appearance. They are of a medium build – neither too heavy nor light, and generally weigh between 40 and 60 pounds. Unlike bloodhounds, Plott Hounds do not have sagging skin. Their bark is also uniquely high-pitched. Their coats are usually short, smooth, and a dark patchy brown and gray also known as brindle. Both puppies and adult dogs are known for their friendly demeanor and courageous spirit.

Plott Hound breeders recommend that potential owners have plenty of room for the dog to roam, as they require a great deal of exercise and activity; they are notorious wanderers. Additionally, take care when feeding the Plott Hound – this breed is known to eat food quickly and may suffer from stomach and other digestive problems.

While there are currently no large Plott Hound rescue groups, there is a national organization dedicated to Plott Hound owners. The American Plott Association is one of many coonhound clubs known nationally and is located in Oxford, N.C. For further information visit the American Kennel Club's webpage for referrals on Plott Hound clubs and breeders.

As a side note, for those interested in becoming breeders and competing in various dog shows there are very specific standards for determining the quality of a Plott Hound. The American Kennel Club and other various organizations set the qualifications for a winning dog and they are very stringent. For example, The American Kennel Club stipulates that a Plott Hound will be disqualified from a dog show if its ears extend beyond the tip of the nose or hang bloodhound-like in a long, pendulous fashion.

While Plott Hounds are not as common a breed as others, both puppies and adult dogs can be found at various dog adoption agencies around the country. Homewoods Rescue for the Wayward Hound, located in Bivalve, Md., is an organization that specializes in rescuing all breeds of hound dogs. Adopt-a-Hound, part of the more extensive Save-a-Pet agency, is another fine resource to contact regarding hound dog adoption. Its web page also provides useful information about how to housebreak and train hound puppies, as well as how to care for adult dogs of a variety of hound breeds.

Though many people may not be familiar with the Plott Hound, one advantage of adopting a dog of this breed is clear: you will have a friendly, loyal companion at your side.
