The Keeshond breed is known for its high energy, innate intelligence, and protective manner. The breed's ancestor can be traced back over 200 years to Arctic origins, and the dog remains a popular modern day breed. With a bubbly personality, the Keeshond or Kee is commonly referred to as Smiling Dutchman, as they have the dexterity to turn their lips up to display a grin. With a sunny disposition, friendly demeanor and people-oriented attitude, a Keeshond is a great addition to almost any family.

The Keeshond double coat is more of a fur than dog hair and requires weekly maintenance. The breed's most common coat color is a mixture of black, cream and gray, but can be found in shades of black, brown, orange, buff, and white. It is recommended to never shave a Kee's coat, as it naturally protects the dog from cold and hot weather. The dog's distinctive coat even repels dirt and surprisingly minimizes the doggie odor that many breeds emit. With a 12–15 year average life expectancy, adult dogs stand 16–19 inches and weigh 35–45 pounds. Females and males generally are similar in temperament, so choosing a Kee that compliments the owner's nature may be more appropriate than making a decision based on the dog's sex.

Keeshond puppies experience a unique development process different from most breeds. When first born, Keeshond puppies have a teddy bear like face with the eyes that resemble spectacles and a wooly, furry body. Between 3 and 8 months, the puppies go through a transitional stage where the adult coat begins to replace the puppy coat. Referred to as the baboon or monkey stage among breeders, the puppy resembles a monkey or baboon for a period of time. At one year, puppies are considered adult dogs although they act like two year old children for close to 2 years

Extremely acute, Kees are believed to be able to think and have the ability to discern cause-and-effect situations. Their level of intelligence can add difficulty to training because they become easily bored with repetitive prompts. More for an experienced trainer, Kees require consistency, fairness, and a structured environment.

Puppies purchase price from Keeshond breeders can range anywhere from $350 - $850. Rescue groups offer a more economical cost and are committed to rescue, care, and placement of puppies and adult dogs that were unwanted and/or abused. Usually adoption fees for puppies start at $300, while adult dogs begin at $200. More than a monetary investment, inviting a rescue dog into a family offers the dog an opportunity to thrive in a loving home.

Keeshond rescue groups temporarily take in unwanted Kees from families and shelters. The dogs are examined by a veterinarian, inoculated, tested for heart worm, and micro chipped. The temperament towards children, adults, dogs and other pets is evaluated before identifying adoptive families. Once placed in a new home, the adjustment period for the dog can take up to several months, sometimes longer. The dogs that are lucky enough to be saved by rescue groups have been abused, abandoned, and physically and emotionally weakened. Patience, care, and love help the rescued dog slowly return to its warm, friendly self.

Keeshonds can be a great addition to families that desire a loyal, loving companion. Whether through trusted breeders or local rescue groups, a Kee is a unique breed that is playful, welcoming, and loves attention.
